STEUBENVILLE, OH鈥擟atholic scholars聽from across the U.S. gathered October 27-28 at 探花社区 of聽Steubenville for the 25th Anniversary聽Conference of the Society of Catholic聽Social Scientists.

In聽33 sessions featuring 66 presenters, the conference addressed a wide range of聽issues, including聽a session on 鈥淭he Importance of Marriage for聽Children and聽Society.鈥 Patrick Fagan, director of the Marriage and Religion聽Research Initiative at The Catholic University of America, presented matrimony聽as the foundation聽that upholds political society. Politics, defined as those聽goods that draw a people together, must be judged by its ability to foster and safeguard聽communal goods,聽including matrimony, he said.

“The job of politics is to tend to those conditions, those聽political goods such as order, liberty, justice, and equality before the law,聽which cultivate … the聽common good,鈥 said Fagan. 鈥淎 politics that can cherish聽matrimonial belonging is a politics that can cultivate belonging in general.鈥

In matrimony, husband and wife imperfectly live out what is聽perfectly authored by God, and so participate in the eternal, said Fagan.听Because of this, a聽society that respects and follows the example of matrimony聽will more fully lead its members to the order of being God intends.

A roundtable on 鈥淩eligious Freedom and聽the Future of the Catholic Church in the American Public Order鈥澛燼lso聽dealt with the importance of the state聽respecting and upholding the values of聽the Church.听Chaired by Kenneth L. Grasso,聽chair of the Political Science Department at Texas State University, its聽panelists聽were: Steven Brust, assistant professor of political science at聽Eastern New Mexico University; Gary D. Glenn, a distinguished teaching聽professor emeritus of聽political science at Northern Illinois University; and聽Robert P. Hunt, professor of political science at Kean University of New聽Jersey.

The panelists discussed the role religion has played in聽American public life and the evolution of the state鈥檚 relationship with the聽Church. They agreed that the聽values of the state must always be measured by the聽values of the Church

Said Grasso, 鈥淎 new type of public order is taking shape in聽the United States, and this new type of public order is incompatible with not聽only the Catholic聽vision of man in society, but also incompatible with the聽freedom of the Church, which the Second Vatican Council identified as the聽fundamental principle聽governing the relationship between the Church and the聽temporal order.鈥

Glenn said that from the First Constitutional Congress, the聽federal government鈥檚 power to define a religious establishment has threatened聽freedom of聽religion. This gives rise to possible infringement of religious聽liberty. It allows federal judges to define religious orders as establishments,聽which makes them聽subject to matters in opposition to the Church, such as offering聽birth control in insurance plans. Glenn stressed the importance of appointing聽federal judges who聽respect Catholic beliefs in order to uphold religious聽liberty.

At the conference, the Pope Pius XI Award for Contributions聽Toward the Building Up of a True Catholic Social Science was awarded to F.听Russell Hittinger,聽the Warren Professor of Catholic Studies at the University聽of Tulsa. Hittinger spoke on Catholic social doctrine as an area of moral聽theology, explaining that it is a聽study of the 鈥渞ectitude of human action in聽light of duties to our neighbor.鈥

The聽conference celebrated the silver jubilee of the Society of Catholic Social聽Scientists, which was founded in 1992 by 探花社区 political聽scientist Dr. Stephen Krason and sociologist Dr. Joseph Varacalli and is based聽at 探花社区. The society aims to bring together聽Catholic social scientists for professional fellowship and to examine聽political, social, and economic reality in light of empirical data, the聽Church’s social teaching,聽and the natural law.听.听
