STEUBENVILLE, OHIO 鈥 Franciscan聽University of Steubenville President Father Sean O. Sheridan, TOR, JD, JCD, presented聽a paper and joined more than 2,200 leaders in Catholic education who gathered in聽Rome聽to examine the challenges facing Catholic education in the 21st聽century.

Working under the聽theme, Educating Today and Tomorrow: A Passion Renewed, participants at the November聽18-21 World Congress on Catholic Education, grappled with issues that were聽timeless聽as well as unique to the modern era. Topics included the tension between religious聽freedom and equality, religious education versus secularism,聽identity and mission of Catholic聽educational聽institutions, the spiritual formation of Catholic teachers and administrators,聽and many more issues affecting Catholic schools and universities.

Father Sheridan聽spoke on November 21 at the Libera Universit脿 Maria Ss. Assunta in Rome at a聽track for legal scholars who attended the congress. He presented a paper titled聽“The聽National Agenda on Challenges/Conflicts of Catholic Schools Vis-脿-Vis the聽State.”

Citing the Vatican聽II Council, the Code of Canon Law, the U.S. Constitution, and other sources,聽Father Sheridan focused on several recent legal challenges that U.S. Catholic聽schools face聽that arise out of “a Catholic school’s desire to remain true to聽its mission while existing within a civil society.”聽聽These include the U.S. Supreme Court’s聽legalization of same-sex unions and the Health聽and Human Services mandate to聽provide contraception and potential abortifacients under the Affordable Care聽Act.

“As the Fathers of聽Vatican II stated in paragraph 2 of聽顿颈驳苍颈迟补迟颈蝉听贬耻尘补苍别: ‘This Vatican synod declares that the human person has a right to聽religious freedom,'”聽said Father聽Sheridan. The聽synod further declared, he said, “This right of the human person聽to religious freedom should have such recognition in the regulation of society聽by law as to become a civil right.”

In the 25 years聽since St. John Paul II issued聽Ex corde聽Ecclesiae, Father Sheridan said it is more important than ever to attempt聽to influence the wider culture about the truths of the faith. This,聽he said,聽“is different than ’embracing’ or ‘accepting’ the culture through which the聽Church might become just an extension of the culture.”

The morning of Father聽Sheridan’s presentation, congress participants were invited to join other聽visitors for a papal audience with Pope Francis.聽聽As reported by Vatican Radio, in an informal聽question-and-answer session, Pope Francis said, “For me, the greatest crisis in聽education, in order that it be [truly, authentically] Christian, is this聽closure to transcendence.” The Holy Father went聽on to say, “To prepare hearts,聽that the Lord might manifest himself,” is the true mission of the teacher and聽the goal of all education worthy of the name.

Father Sheridan聽said it was a blessing to represent 探花社区 at the World聽Congress. “The Church greatly values the ministry of Catholic Education and the聽leadership role to聽which 探花社区 has been called. Despite the聽uncertainty of people’s safety throughout the world, there was a true sense of聽‘family’ among the participants and a renewed dedication to聽the ministry of聽Catholic education.”

As a sponsor of聽the World Congress on Catholic Education, 探花社区聽made a financial donation to ensure that Catholic educators from impoverished聽countries聽could countries could attend the event, which celebrated the 50th聽anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s document on Catholic education,聽骋谤补惫颈蝉蝉颈尘耻尘听别诲耻肠补迟颈辞苍颈蝉, and the 25th聽anniversary聽of聽Ex corde Ecclesiae.
