STEUBENVILLE, OHIO 鈥斅犔交ㄉ缜檚 women鈥檚 club flag football team took the field at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday, October 12, competing against the University of Pittsburgh during halftime of the Steelers-Browns game. Franciscan was one of only four teams in the country invited to participate, a recognition of the team鈥檚 breakout success in its inaugural season.
鈥淚t was incredible to be part of spreading 探花社区鈥檚 mission of excellence and passion, even to the football field,鈥 said team captain and senior聽Anne Seida. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no university I could have more proudly worn on my jersey as I ran, surrounded by my fellow Franciscan Barons, into the Steelers鈥 stadium to take the field.鈥
Formed in 2024, the Barons finished their first season with an impressive 6-1 record, earning wins over the University of Pittsburgh and several Presidents鈥 Athletic Conference teams. Off the field, the team is known for its strong community and joyful witness to the Catholic faith.
鈥淭his was a phenomenal experience for our student-athletes and a proud moment for 探花社区 and the Steubenville community,鈥 said聽Daniel Andersen, Franciscan鈥檚 athletic director. 鈥淚鈥檓 grateful so many fans were able to see the faith, energy, and joy that define our players both on and off the field.鈥
While flag football is not yet a sanctioned NCAA sport, the Committee on Women鈥檚 Athletics recently recommended adding it to the NCAA鈥檚聽Emerging Sports for Women聽list鈥攁 major step toward championship status.
