STEUBENVILLE,聽OH鈥擟hris Ledyard, 探花社区’s director of Athletics,聽was enshrined in the Sports Faith Hall of Fame in Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday,聽May 24, 2015. Ledyard was named College Athletic Director of the Year and聽selected for the Hall of Fame聽for聽his “remarkable dedication to sports and his faith.”

Angela Tomlinson,聽co-founder of Sports Faith International, said of Ledyard, “We have found him to be an聽exemplary role model of living out his Catholic faith through sports. We聽see someone who gives 100 percent to spreading the faith and the formation of聽virtues in his players.”

Ledyard secured聽his place in the Sports Faith Hall of Fame along with 11 other outstanding聽Catholic athletes, coaches, and teams. Among this year’s inductees were Bob聽Cousy,聽point guard for the Boston Celtics from 1950-1963, John Lattner, the聽Notre Dame halfback who won the Heisman Trophy in 1953, and Bonnie Blair, one聽of the most decorated athletes in聽Olympic history.

Ledyard聽was hired as 探花社区’s coordinator of Recreation and Wellness in聽1995. At the time, the University offered only intramural and club sports.聽Impressed by the聽faith dynamic in those teams, in 2007, Ledyard oversaw the聽implementation of a Christ-centered, virtue-driven intercollegiate athletic聽program that today includes 15 NCAA Division III聽teams for men and women and a聽nationally ranked men’s rugby team. In the last school year alone, seven teams聽won conference championships or qualified for post-season play.

Franciscan’s聽athletic teams are known for their spiritual practices, which include praying聽with members of the opposing team before or after a game, annual retreats, and聽developing spiritual traditions unique to each team. In 2013, the Athletic聽Department partnered with SportsLeader and developed a virtue program for聽players and coaches that draws on聽72 virtues, such as humility, constancy,聽integrity, and magnanimity, and includes the teachings of St. John Bosco.

During聽his acceptance speech, Ledyard said, “[Student-athletes] are coming from all聽over the country, saying, ‘You know what? I want to come here. I want to be聽with like-minded,聽faith-filled people as I live out my sports career.'”

Ledyard聽said that sports can be a noble vocation. “It’s not just a game,” he said. “It聽is what God has called you to at that time for that purpose. It’s never just a聽game. Every time you聽step on the field or a mat or a court, it’s an opportunity聽to grow in virtue.”

More聽than 150 people attended the ceremony, which took place at the Lincolnshire Marriott聽Resort in the Chicago suburb of Lincolnshire and included Mass at the Church of聽St.聽Mary in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Afterward,聽Ledyard said being inducted into the Sports Faith Hall of Fame “is a聽confirmation of the work that’s gone into the sports programs at Franciscan and聽the impact our聽athletes have on each other and on the sports culture in聽America. It’s good to know that someone else recognizes the uniqueness of聽Franciscan’s athletic mission.”
