STEUBENVILLE, OHIO鈥擨n his message for this year鈥檚 World Communications Day, Pope Francis said that the Catholic Church 鈥渘eeds to be concerned for, and present in, the world of communication, in order to dialogue with people today and to help them encounter Christ.鈥

On April 11-12, 探花社区 will assist in answering the pope鈥檚 appeal by hosting the 2014 communication arts conference titled 鈥淢edia and Faith: New Beginnings.鈥

鈥淭he Media and Faith Conference is critical in today鈥檚 media climate where so much of what you see and hear and read are contrary to Church teachings,鈥 says Dr. Wayne Lewis, associate professor of communication arts at 探花社区. 鈥淥ur main goal is to show students that you can remain committed to your faith and still produce great media鈥攚hether that is print or online or broadcast.鈥

Dr. Eugene Gan, associate professor of communication arts at 探花社区, explains, 鈥淭his is a response to Pope Francis鈥 call to be 鈥榓 network not of wires but of people,鈥 supporting one another in the many varied ways we can make the Church鈥攁nd thus the Good News of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ鈥攔eal and present to others.鈥

The conference will feature Doug Keck, president and chief operating officer of EWTN and host of EWTN鈥檚 popular Bookmark series. He will speak at the plenary session on 鈥21st Century Samaritans: Making a Difference on the Digital Superhighway.鈥 Matt Weilgos 鈥90, manager of media production at Franciscan Media (formerly St. Anthony Messenger Press); and Terry Mattingly, director of the Washington Journalism Center with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities and longtime 鈥淥n Religion鈥 columnist with Scripps Howard News Service, will also speak at the conference.

Amanda Melefsky 鈥05, a writer and producer based in New York whose production credits include films 鈥淏ella鈥 and 鈥淭he Human Experience,鈥 as well as DeSales Media鈥檚 World Youth Day Rio live coverage broadcast in 2013, will be the keynote speaker Friday evening.

A presentation titled 鈥淢ass Media Is Dead: Optimizing Your Impact in the TechMedia Age鈥 will be given by David DeWolf 鈥00, chairman and CEO of 3Pillar Global, Inc., the mid-Atlantic鈥檚 leading software product development company. DeWolf was named to the 鈥淭op 40 Under 40鈥 list by the Washington Business Journal, as well as one of SmartCEO Magazine鈥檚 鈥淔uture 50.鈥

The closing presentation, 鈥淧ope Francis as a Communicator,鈥 will be given by Ann Rodgers, communications director of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and former longtime religion reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

鈥淧ope Francis is the personification of what Marshall McLuhan, the father of communication studies, meant when he declared that 鈥榯he medium is the message,鈥欌 says Rodgers of her talk. 鈥淧ope Francis鈥 character, in which love and mercy shine forth, give emphasis and credibility to the Gospel message of love and mercy. In that, he closely follows the example of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi.鈥

Other workshops include 鈥淩adio鈥擫ocal or Global? The Shape of Radio in the 21st Century鈥; 鈥淐ommunicating With the Media: Advertising, Marketing, and Public Relations With a Christian Attitude鈥; and 鈥淐ommunicating Christianity Creatively: Cinematic Storytelling and the Future.鈥
