STEUBENVILLE, OH鈥”In my聽words and in my actions, I shall always reserve communion with the Catholic聽Church,” pledged聽four of 探花社区’s new faculty and staff as they placed聽their hands on the Book of the Gospels and took the Oath of聽Fidelity during聽Mass on Saturday, August 22, of 探花社区’s Orientation Weekend.

New Franciscan theology聽faculty, priests, and other appropriate personnel have publicly promised to聽remain faithful to the聽teaching authority of the Church since 1989, when the聽Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a decree for Catholic聽colleges and universities. This decree required those directly connected with聽teaching Catholic doctrine to profess their adherence to聽the Magisterium. Franciscan聽University was the first U.S. Catholic university to respond to the decree.

As part of their Orientation聽Weekend, 640 new students and their families witnessed Dr. Alexander Plato, assistant聽professor聽of philosophy; Father John Shanahan, TOR, local minister of Holy聽Spirit Friary and pastoral counselor; Kimberly Sponseller, executive聽director of聽Marketing and Communications; and Brother Jason Wooleyhan, TOR, pastoral聽associate for Evangelization, solemnly聽declare their faithfulness to the聽Magisterium.

The oath was administered聽by the Most Reverend Jeffrey M. Monforton, bishop of the Diocese of聽Steubenville.

“Our faith is never meant聽to be taken lightly,” Bishop Monforton said in his homily preceding the administration聽of the oath. “I’m聽grateful to say that here at 探花社区, you will聽hear and see, time and time again, that our faith is first. Jesus is the center聽of our lives.”

In his homily, the bishop聽urged聽students to trust聽that God knows what he is doing with their lives and to remain faithful to him.

After Mass, Plato聽reflected on the significance of taking the oath as a philosophy professor. “In聽this day and age, it’s important聽that we have faithful Catholics teaching in聽any discipline,” he said. “I don’t teach dogma, but I want to bring students to聽the truth using聽the methods of philosophy so that they can embrace the truth聽for themselves. I’m using philosophy for its ancient, classical purpose鈥攖o love聽wisdom. And if God is wisdom, then ultimately the end point of philosophy is聽the love of God.”
