STEUBENVILLE, OH—The newest issue of Quaestiones Disputatae features the philosophical thought of Edith Stein, a Jewish convert to Catholicism and Carmelite nun. Stein was martyred in the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942 and was canonized in 1998, under her religious name, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.

The Quaestiones Disputatae issue, “Selected Papers on the Legacy of Edith Stein’s Finite and Eternal Being,” features well-known Edith Stein scholar Sarah Borden Sharkey as special guest editor. It includes articles from philosophers such as Glenn Chicoine, Timothy Martel, Kimberly Baltzer-Jaray, and Sarah Borden Sharkey herself.

“Thanks to the hard work of Dr. Borden Sharkey, the issue features articles of particularly high quality ranging over fascinating features of Edith Stein’s great work, Finite and Eternal Being,” said Dr. Paul Symington, an assistant professor of philosophy at ̽������ and editor of Quaestiones Disputatae. Topics include personhood, the interplay between faith and reason, and art and the role of truth.

The work of Stein coupled Christian devotion and philosophical acumen. From 1913-1918, Stein was an assistant to and collaborator with the founder of the phenomenological movement, Edmund Husserl. Husserl’s new methodology inadvertently offered some of his students, including Stein, a rich perspective on the value of Christianity.

features original work by scholars from all over the world. Recent issues represent the fruit of philosophy conferences at ̽������ and elsewhere. Papers are selected for inclusion by an expert in the field who serves as special guest editor for each issue.
