STEUBENVILLE, OHIO鈥擣ranciscan聽University of Steubenville laments today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in聽Obergefell v. Hodges聽that effectively聽legalizes聽same-sex marriage throughout the country.聽While it is clearly a setback for marriage, the University will continue聽to analyze the decision and its effect on the聽Catholic Church and Franciscan聽University.

Father Sean O. Sheridan,聽TOR, president of 探花社区, stated, “Even though the U.S. Supreme聽Court has set aside millennia of human wisdom聽and ruled that civil marriage now聽includes the union of two men or two women (and who knows what future combinations),聽探花社区 holds to the聽hallowed and unchanging teachings of the聽Catholic Church, which recognizes marriage as the unique, fruitful, lifelong聽union between a man and a woman,聽blessed through the sacrament of Holy Matrimony.”

Father Sheridan聽went on to say, “We can’t ignore the biological fact that children come from聽the union of a man and a woman, and marriage between a聽man and a woman has been聽the building block of both Christian and non-Christian societies for centuries.聽Maintaining this definition of marriage and affording聽it special rights and聽privileges enables society to flourish and respect God’s mandate to be fruitful聽and multiply.”

“The聽Catholic bishops of the United States have spoken eloquently and with firm leadership聽on this issue, and 探花社区 will continue to聽stand with them in聽defense of the true meaning of marriage,” Father Sheridan said.

“We also will pray聽for those who disagree with us and ask them to pray with us, that we may engage聽each other in charity and sincerity on this聽incredibly important and sensitive issue.”
