STEUBENVILLE, OH鈥擲ome 1,800 participants gathered at聽探花社区 from 39 states, 4 Canadian聽provinces, and聽8 countries, some traveling from as far as Singapore, Kenya, and China, for the聽25th聽annual Defending the Faith聽Conference, July 24-26, 2015. The conference featured renowned Catholic聽speakers and authors including Dr. Scott and Kimberly Hahn,聽Patrick Madrid, Dr.聽Peter Kreeft, Father聽Michael Gaitley, MIC, Mike Aquilina, Bishop聽Ronald W. Gainer, Jennifer Fulwiler,聽and musician Matt Maher, who shared personal stories and theological insights聽about how to better聽understand and defend the Catholic faith.

In his keynote talk, radio show host聽and Catholic evangelist Patrick Madrid spoke on how to articulate the faith聽while having to聽deal with issues our parents and grandparents never dealt with,聽such as legalized same-sex marriage and a rapidly increasing atheist聽population. In addressing such issues, Madrid said, “the power of testimony is聽huge.” Stories often lead others to conversion, he said.聽“Say to yourself, ‘Why聽am I Catholic?’ not just ‘Why are people Catholic?’ but ‘Why am I Catholic,聽and how would I explain that in my聽own words to somebody if somebody asks me聽about that?'”

“What the world needs more than聽anything is a living sign of unity through the Church,” said five-time聽Grammy-nominated聽worship leader Matt Maher during his talk, which detailed his聽return to Catholicism. Strumming his guitar, he quoted Jesus’ prayer in聽John聽17, “I pray, Father, that they may be one, as you and I are one,” and explained聽that the way to truly impact people, effectively聽evangelize, and achieve unity聽is to show others Christ’s love through humility and a willingness to listen. Maher聽played several songs聽during his talk, including “Your Grace Is Enough,” a song聽he wrote while undergoing treatment for Hepatitis C, which he contracted from聽a聽blood transfusion. He performed a concert later that evening.

In her聽afternoon workshop, Jennifer Fulwiler, a former atheist turned Catholic radio聽show host and author, discussed the聽importance of reaching out in love to聽atheists. Speaking from personal experience and from the countless conversion聽stories she has聽heard, she said that first, it is vital to explain why we聽believe what we believe. Second, she warned conference participants not to view聽atheists and other non-Catholics as prizes to be won but rather as people to be聽loved. Finally, she reminded participants that “the work聽of conversion is God鈥檚聽work, not ours.”

Prolific author and professor of聽philosophy at Boston College and King’s College, Peter Kreeft examined聽Russian novelist聽Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s controversial Harvard Commencement Address聽delivered in 1978. Kreeft views the address as “one of the聽greatest speeches in聽the history of civilization” because of its honest and accurate discussion of聽problems with Western culture such as聽materialism, a decline in courage, and聽spiritual weariness, the results of placing man before God. Agreeing with Solzhenitsyn’s聽solution聽that Americans must reach a balance in which they neither curse their聽physical nature nor ignore their spiritual nature, Kreeft offered聽hope for聽America, saying, “It’s never too late [to change].”

Dr. Scott Hahn, the Father Michael聽Scanlan, TOR, Professor of Biblical Theology and the New Evangelization at聽Franciscan聽University of Steubenville and founder of the St. Paul Center for聽Biblical Theology, spoke on the importance of recalling the “deep聽memory” of聽who we are in Christ in order to effectively evangelize in America. He cited聽statistics from the PEW Research Center聽showing that faith in America has been聽declining, but also quoted St. Paul’s words that “where sin abounds, grace聽abounds all the聽more.” He also talked about meaningful suffering, and how we聽need to realize that God uses suffering to bring us home to heaven, not to聽“get聽even with us” for our sins. He said we should struggle to avoid sin, not to聽avoid suffering.

In her keynote talk, Hahn’s wife and聽fellow author, Kimberly, explained the importance of fighting the spiritual聽battle alongside聽the Lord. “God has a plan for your life. So does the devil,”聽she said. “Listen to the Lord tell you who you are and what he has planned for聽you to do.” She emphasized that self-denial and discipline are key in fighting聽this battle, and that one way God strengthens us, especially聽during great聽suffering, is through gratitude. Prayer and Scripture, she added, are important聽offensive weapons we should use.

Ulf Ekman, a native of Sweden, and聽his wife, Birgitta, were charismatic evangelicals who founded a ministry and traveled聽through聽the former Soviet Union and other countries establishing Bible schools聽and churches. When God led them to Catholicism, they knew聽converting would be聽difficult due to the magnitude and constant growth of their ministry. However,聽Ulf realized that “there are two聽ways you can go into the water鈥攜ou can go by聽the way of Jonah, or you can go by the way of Peter. One way or the other, it聽is time to get聽into the water.” The couple joined the Catholic Church in March聽last year.

The Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer,聽bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, spoke on the conference’s聽theme,聽“Always forward,” in relation to First Peter. He explained that in St.聽Peter’s time, hope was often thought of as wishful thinking, but聽Christians are聽given living hope that links us to the risen Christ and allows us to always聽move forward, even through suffering.

First-time Defending the Faith conference聽attendee Jeanette Houle, director of Youth Formation and Ministry at St. Thomas聽Aquinas Parish in Pilot Point, Texas, was impacted by the message of living the聽joy of the Gospel. “We’ve heard Pope Francis say over聽and over that there are聽too many grumpy Catholics,” said Houle. “How can we really be doing our best to聽be true to Christ and his聽Church if we are constantly wallowing?”

Chris Stroud traveled from St.聽Vincent de Paul Parish in Fort Wayne, Indiana, after hearing about the聽conference online. “It’s聽amazing how many people are here who are like-minded,聽serious Catholics,” said Stroud. “Usually, I feel like I’m the most serious聽Catholic in Mass. I don’t get that feeling here. And that鈥檚 impressive.”

During the conference, participants聽were given multiple opportunities to receive the sacrament of reconciliation聽and attend Mass.聽There was also a Holy Hour with a reflection by the Most聽Reverend Bernard A. Hebda, archbishop of Newark, New聽Jersey.

Next year’s Defending the Faith Conference聽will feature a staged debate between Father Michael Schmitz, director of Youth聽and聽Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Duluth, Minnesota,聽as the voice of the Church, and聽Patrick Madrid as the voice of secular聽culture.

This聽year, 探花社区 offered 5 adult, 2聽young adult, and 21 youth conferences in 13 states and 2 Canadian provinces.聽For complete conferences information, visit聽.
